People in the countryside don’t
have access to electricity, so they depend on chopped wood to
cook their tortillas and beans. In the dry season, the farmers
often burn their fields to prepare them for planting their
crops. When they do that, the pollution is so great that many
times the city of Tegucigalpa has been forced to close the
airport due to poor visibility. Honduras used to enjoy beautiful
forests that protected the environment, but the excessive
deforestation has created a shortage of water and climatic
changes.
In an effort to
alleviate the situation, Bridge of Peace will be providing
teacher workshops and school vegetable gardens that will help
the children understand that their future is in peril if they
don’t take care of the
environment we all share.
If the families
don’t have the knowledge or the funds to take care of their
health, the children won’t function at their best. Bridge of
Peace has donated thousands of dental health kits to the San
Marcos Community Health Center. The doctors have agreed to
present workshops at the schools and provide
fluoride tablets to protect the children’s teeth.
We are presently
looking for hospital supplies to enhance what the health service
is able to provide. |
