WHERE WE WORK
Honduras
is a country strategically situated in the center of Central America,
bordering with three countries: Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. At
the present time, only the extreme West bordering with Guatemala and the
North areas are receiving the benefits from tourist dollars. Although,
Europeans were already visiting the Bay Islands, the US tourism is just
discovering its lure. For such a small country, Honduras has two UNESCO
World Heritage Sites: the Mayan Copan ruins and the Mosquitia Rain Forrest,
considered the Amazon of Central America
Honduras
is considered the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, however,
for the longest time, it was the second poorest, only after Haiti. It is “a
chronically poor country of 7.5 million people where 40% of the populace
earns less than $3.00 a day.” (Miami Herald, July 1st 2007) 61% of the
families in rural areas live in extreme poverty or under $1.00 a day.
We have
worked mostly in two regions:
·
The San
Marcos de Colón area in the southeast. Our work there centered in la Montaña
de la Botija, a national protected forest where people live with few
resources in isolated rural communities. This year we adopted 21 more
schools from poor communities in the San Marcos School District.
·
An area west of Tegucigalpa, Guajiquiro, where the population
consists primarily of Lenca indigenous people. |
